On Thursday, the U.S. Energy Information Administration released its regular, monthly, national electricity generation statistics. Since they are always produced with a two-month time lag, this most recent release was for the month of March. Analyses of the data reveal a surge in the amount of electricity generated by renewables. Further analysis reveals three noteworthy firsts:

Renewables generate more than 20% of US electricity
The amount of U.S. electricity generated from renewable sources declined steadily from about 35% in 1950 to a low of 6% in 2000. It was only the growth of wind energy from 2008 onwards, supplemented in the last year or so by solar, which has dramatically reversed that trend. In March, for the first time since the 1970s, renewables generated more than 20% of the nation’s electricity.

Renewables generate more electricity than nuclear
Nuclear generation peaked at 20% of the U.S. total in the late 1980s and has been unchanged since. While nuclear output has stagnated, that for renewables, led mainly by wind and solar, has grown strongly – particularly in the last few years. As a result of this growth, March was the first month, since the 1980s, when generation from renewables exceeded that from nuclear.

Generation from Wind and Solar passes 10%
Rapid expansion of wind and solar is clearly illustrated by this chart which shows monthly electricity generation from them, as a percentage of the U.S. total, since 2006. March was the first month ever when wind and solar generation surpassed 10%.
