Rising Demand in Argentina for Danish Solutions for Liveable, Sustainable Cities

Denmark has a strong brand in South America within sustainable urban planning. A successful Master Class in Buenos Aires arranged by The Trade Council, Gehl Architects and Argentinian authorities demonstrated this clearly. More events are in the pipeline.

Bringing Danish experience to South America

All over South America, cities are striving to change urban planning policies in order to increase their sustainability and liveability. The inspiration derives from the development of cities like Copenhagen, where citizens are at the core of urban planning.

In Argentina, Buenos Aires is determined to be a first mover in the region. In recent years, the Buenos Aires City Government has made great progress prioritizing public space, public transportation and bike infrastructure, working together with the Danish Embassy within these areas.

In May 2016, The Trade Council in Argentina teamed up with the Buenos Aires City Government, the National Government of Argentina and the Inter-American Development Bank to arrange a Master Class featuring Gehl Architects. They shared their internationally acclaimed expertise on urban planning with participants representing cities in Argentina, Bolivia, Peru, Chile, Paraguay, Uruguay and Brazil.

Fernando Straface, Secretary General and Foreign Affairs of the Buenos Aires City Government said the Masterclass was, “very useful to explain to residents what we mean when we talk about creating a more liveable city: to explain what we’ve been doing, and also the challenges that still need to be faced."

In addtion to displaying Danish urban planning experiences, the Master Class also featured a range of concrete solutions presented by prominent Danish companies, thereby serving as a useful platform for bringing together Latin American urban decision makers and Danish industry. Gehl Master Class is being followed up by activities in Chile.

Keeping momentum

In October 2017, Copenhagen will be one of the main themes of the Architecture Biennial of Buenos Aires. Under the title“Partnerships for sustainable development: The Copenhagen case”, the City of Copenhagen, Smith Innovation, Bjarke Ingels Group and the Danish Embassy will arrange an exhibition combined with other activities.

In close cooperation with the Buenos Aires City Government, the Danish Embassy will concurrently host a Liveable City Conference presenting selected commercial cases. The conference will serve as launch pad for a series of commercial activities in Argentina. The subsequent visit of Morten Kabell, the Mayor of Technical and Environmental Affairs to Buenos Aires will further strengthen the cooperation between Copenhagen and Buenos Aires, documented by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding.

The Danish Embassy will continue to develop the field of public-private partnership with Argentinean authorities. Through the enhanced regional cooperation in Latin America, the embassies in Argentina and Chile are planning to arrange further commercial promotion activities in 2018.

There are plenty of opportunities within this field in Argentina and there is a strong interest by Danish companies to share their experience.

All around the world, The Trade Council works to create awareness of Danish companies and build bridges for more trade.
