Nicolai Wammen was appointed Minister for European Affairs on October 3, 2011.
Nicolai Wammen became member of the Danish Parliament (Folketing) for the Social Democrats for the first in 2001. From 2005 – 2011 he held the position as mayor of the second largest city of Denmark, Aarhus. In 2011 he returned to national politics when he was re-elected for Parliament.
As Minister for European Affairs, Nicolai Wammen has led Denmark through a successful Presidency of the Council of the European Union. Denmark’s presidency came in a critical period for the negotiations on the EU’s multi-annual financial framework, and the minister has been widely praised for his solid work on the matter. The minister works to maintain a united Europe with a strong and active Danish voice. He believes that the European Union is one of the driving forces when it comes to maintaining and continuing the peaceful development in the Western Balkans.
Nicolai Wammen holds an MSc in Political Science from University of Aarhus.
