Comments from the Danish Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister of Defense concerning the situation in the Strait of Hormuz

26.07.2019  14:11

Minister for Foreign Affairs Jeppe Kofod:

”The Danish Government shares the concern about the maritime security situation in the Strait of Hormuz. In these past few weeks, we have been in close contact with our allies. As a seafaring nation, it is essential to Denmark that freedom of navigation is sustained. I welcome the UK Government’s proposal for an international maritime security initiative in the area. The initiative will have a strong European footprint. The Danish Government looks positively towards a possible contribution to such initiative, but it is of course something we will need to discuss with Parliament once we have a clearer picture of the exact tasks and partners.”

Minister of Defense Trine Bramsen:

“The Danish Government is of the opinion that a Danish military maritime contribution would be relevant and able to contribute to upholding security in the Strait of Hormuz. As an active seafaring nation, Denmark would thus contribute to compliance with international conventions and securing free trade. The Government will discuss the issue within the Committee on Foreign Policy. The Royal Danish Navy is strong and capable and would be able to contribute actively and effectively to this type of engagement.”
