The Danish Embassies in Latin America are looking for Talented interns for the Spring Semester 2027

Three Danish embassies in Latin America (Santiago, Bogotá, Mexico City) are looking for interns to form an integral part of both the political and commercial teams. The internship is a unique opportunity to supplement your academic studies with practical key skills and thorough knowledge of Latin American business and political affairs.

 

The internships have a duration of six months starting the 1st of February 2027 and ending the 31st of July 2027.

 

We are looking to fill the following positions:

 

 


Tasks

 

Internship in the Trade Council

 

The commercial department at the embassies works with supporting a large variety of Danish businesses with their operations in Latin America. The interns take part in the daily commercial work, as well as participates in the embassies’ political and administrative work when required. Moreover, ad hoc tasks of consular and cultural character can occur.

 


Tasks typically include, but are not limited to:

 

  • Drafting market and sector insight reports

  • Supporting business opportunities between local and Danish companies, business delegations and/or minister visits.

  • Participating in the embassies’ political work

  • Development and maintenance of the embassies’ website

  • Participating in various meetings and seminars

  • Contributing with ideas for communication, incl. draft articles to the Danish and local media.

 

The commercial interns will also work in an integrated manner with the political area, as an important part of the commercial work at the embassies is political in nature. This includes areas such as EU trade politics (including Global Gateway) and at the embassies in Mexico and Colombia, it also includes working with strategic sector cooperation.

Internship at the Political Department (Bogotá and Mexico City)

The political department works closely with the local governments’ political agenda and the local EU delegations. Latin America is in an increasingly strategic position in a geopolitical perspective – this in light of both the relation to the US, and the EU, and as a political intern you will follow domestic and international policy developments within each country and the side-accredited countries. 

 

 

Tasks typically include, but are not limited to:

 

  • Support the embassies’ public diplomacy efforts
  • Help prepare and participate in meetings, seminars, and events
  • Help preparing and executing visits from and to Denmark
  • Answer questions and inquiries from local and Danish citizens, as well as from entities, businesses, and institutions
  • Contribute to maintain the embassy’s website and social media

 

In Bogotá the political department covers areas such as 1) Human rights and social change, 2) The peace process and the implementation of the peace agreement, 3) Deforestation, 4) Gender equality and women & girls’ rights, and assist with the embassy’s work in Bolivia.

 

In Mexico, the focus of the political monitoring and reporting is on key domestic policy developments of relevance to Denmark as well as on developments in Mexico’s bilateral relations with countries of interest and vis-à-vis international organisations and fora, including the UN, the EU and the G20. The political intern will also support the political and Public Diplomacy work related to the celebration in 2027 of 200 years of diplomatic relations between Denmark and Mexico.

Duration and application deadlines


We are looking for interns twice a year, and the internship is for six months. We are currently looking for interns for the spring semester 2027.


Spring semester: 1 February – 31 July

  • Deadline for applying to this team is 10 September

Autumn semester: 1 August – 31 January

  • Deadline for applying to this team is 10 March the same year

 

Qualifications

 

As an intern, you will be included as an important contributor on relevant projects, and will achieve a deep understanding of the local context and industry conditions. It is expected that you show great flexibility, initiative and team spirit in your work as well as a positive attitude when engaging in new tasks.

 

Furthermore, the tasks include a significant amount of outgoing communication, and it is therefore necessary that the interns have a good level of Spanish and are proficient in English, both orally and in writing.


The interns should also be familiar with the programs Microsoft Office package, as well as general IT and internet use.

 

The internship must contribute to your education and will take place under the guidance of an academic staff member. Before applying for an internship, we recommend that you examine what academic requirements your educational institution imposes on you in connection with a internship.

 

Requirements

 

To be considered for an internship, you must be enrolled in a study program at a higher education institution at the bachelor’s or master’s level at a higher education institution in Denmark, and you must remain enrolled throughout the entire internship period.

 

If you are a foreign citizen, you must have lived in Denmark for at least 3 years, and have a permanent residence in Denmark at the time of application.

 

It is also a condition for being offered an internship that you have not previously been an intern in the Danish Foreign Service, that you can obtain security clearance from the Danish authorities, and that you maintain this clearance throughout the internship.

 

You are asked to ensure in advance that your educational institution’s internship requirements are compatible with an internship in the Danish Foreign Service (e.g., learning requirements and required duration of the internship).

 

Please note that you can only complete one internship in the Danish Foreign Service.

 

Holidays and working hours


The average working time is 37 hours per week (including lunch breaks). You earn 2.08 holiday days per month of internship corresponding to 12.5 days during your 6-month internship. In addition, if your studies require you to write a major academic assignment in connection with your internship, you will be able to get certain writing-free days (the number will be determined by the representation based on requirements for the scope and complexity of the assignment, but will never be able to exceed 10 days).

 

Housing and insurance


You are responsible for finding accommodation and all associated costs. You must also, at your own expense, take out insurance covering the return journey in the event of illness and death, as well as liability outside working hours).

 

Reimbursement of certain expenditure


The internship is unpaid, but you will receive a monthly compensation based on local cost level to cover documented accommodation, transport, insurance and other expenses related to the internship.


Most interns will also have the opportunity to include their SU, but you should seek clarification with the Danish Agency for Higher Education.

 

How to apply?

 

 

The internship is approximately 37 hours per week with the right to 2,08 days of vacation each month of the internship. The internship is unpaid, but the embassies contribute a minor monthly supplement to cover expenses.

 

 

A complete application includes a motivated job application, CV, a prioritized list of internship position and location preferences, as well as relevant diplomas and recommendations.

 

 

Interviews are expected to be conducted between 16-18 September and will be in Danish and Spanish.

About the embassies

 

The Danish Embassy in Bogotá, Colombia

Colombia has become a green frontrunner in the region. The government has established an ambitious set of goals to stop deforestation, attain ‘total peace’ nationally, protect biodiversity, and achieve a green energy transition. With this comes a growing market for green energy and strategic sector cooperation in areas of sustainable cities and energy. The Danish Embassy in Bogotá’s work support these political developments and consider Colombia a strategic partner for Danish commercial interests. With a new government set to take office in August 2026, Colombia is entering a period of political transition that will shape the country's policy priorities in the coming years.

 

 

The Danish Embassy in Mexico City, Mexico

In 2017 Denmark and Mexico entered into a Strategic Partnership and in 2023 agreed on a four-year Action Plan, that guides the work to strengthen the diplomatic ties between Denmark and Mexico politically, economically and culturally. Mexico is a popular nearshoring location for Danish companies that are looking into neighbouring markets to the North and/or South. The economic diplomacy efforts focus on core competencies of Denmark and of Danish companies within health, agriculture, as well as energy. In addition, the embassy is a designated Climate Front Post, meaning that we work comprehensively towards promoting and implementing the green agenda at the Danish Embassy in Mexico as well as broader in the region. 

 

 

The Danish Embassy in Santiago, Chile

Chile is all about the green transition and climate change adaption and an increasing amount of Danish companies are looking to Chile due to the easy access to and stability of the economy. The Chilean Government has increased their ambitions through a series of new laws to optimise water use, minimise energy use, waste and the climate footprint of the economic development, proving ample opportunities for Danish companies in the regional priority sectors. As the Chilean government has mentioned Denmark as a role-model economy, the embassy’s economic diplomacy works to use this opportunity to position Danish commercial interests on the Chilean market. To do so, a series of strategic alliances are underway providing strong platforms for working with and accessing the Chilean market.
