Gender equality

The overall purpose of the course is to enable all MFA staff and advisors to promote gender equality in development cooperation.

Target Group

The course is mandatory for all MFA staff working with development cooperation as well as for Danida advisors and consultants working under MFA contract on development cooperation activities. The course is open to partners in development cooperation. 


After completing the course, users will:

  • Know about gender equality in an overall context
  • Know how culture, norms and traditions have an impact on gender equality.
  • Know about the international legal and policy context of gender equality
  • Understand why and how to apply a gender analysis at country and sector levels
  • Know how to integrate gender equality in specific sectors
  • Know the opportunities for promoting gender equality in global agendas and through multilateral organisations
  • Understand how synergy around gender issues between multilateral and bilateral cooperation is possible
  • Understand the international normative framework and approaches to gender equality in fragile contexts
  • Know how climate change and natural disasters influence gender relations
  • Know about gender issues in humanitarian responses to emergency situations
  • Know how to apply gender equality tools throughout the programme cycle 


The course is divided into 6 modules:

  • Module 1: Gender Equality – a Key to Development
  • Module 2: Working with Gender Equality at Country level
  • Module 3: Gender Equality in Sector Work
  • Module 4: The Multilateral Dimensions of Promoting Gender Equality
  • Module 5: Gender Equality in Violent Conflict and Peace Building, and in Natural Disasters and Humanitarian Action
  • Module 6: A Gender Lens on the Programme Cycle 




4-5 hours, not including any group exercises and discussions that may be organised by users
