Denmark has received a new Government

Mette Frederiksen has been re-elected as Prime Minister of Denmark. On 15 December 2022, she presented the newly formed cross-party Government to Her Majesty the Queen at Amalienborg Palace.

Mette Frederiksen from the Social Democratic Party (Socialdemokratiet, S) will lead a new coalition government consisting of parties across the political centre. The new government consists of the Social Democrats, the Liberals, and the Moderates.

The three parties together constitute a majority government. Majority governments are a rarity in Danish politics, where minority governments have been more common. There has not been a majority government in Denmark since 1993/94.

The formation of the government is historic in several ways. The negotiations on the formation of the new government have been the longest in modern times and a coalition government represented by parties from both sides of the parliament has not occurred since the late 1970s.

The “second” Government of Prime Minister Frederiksen has 23 ministers. Eleven ministers are from the Social Democratic Party, seven from the Liberal Party (Venstre, V), and five from the Moderates (Moderaterne, M).
