UPR of Trinidad and Tobago, 9th November 2021

Intervention by Denmark

09-11-2021

Denmark welcomes the delegation of Trinidad and Tobago and commends it on adopting its new National Sexual and Reproductive Health Policy. However, we remain concerned about discrimination faced by the LGBT community.

Denmark recommends the Government to decriminalize same-sex conduct between consenting adults by repealing sections 13 and 16 of the Sexual Offences Act.

We note with regret the restrictive legal framework regarding individual rights and freedoms of women and girls.

Denmark recommends the Government to amend its legislation in order to legalize the termination of pregnancies, in cases of risk to the life of the pregnant woman, rape, incest and severe impairment of the foetus.

Finally, Denmark recommends the Government to ratify the CAT.

Denmark wishes Trinidad and Tobago a successful review.

I thank you.
