Maritime

Denmark and India share a strong maritime partnership, working together to build a sustainable, safe, and future-ready shipping sector for both nations.

This cooperation is anchored in the Green Strategic Partnership, launched in 2020, and brings together Denmark’s leading expertise in maritime design, energy efficiency, and low-carbon shipping technology with India’s ambitious Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047. In 2025, the two countries established the Indo-Danish Centre of Excellence (CoE) on Green Shipping, a dedicated platform for advancing decarbonisation, innovation, and technical cooperation across India's maritime sector.

Areas of Cooperation

Green Shipping and Decarbonisation: Supporting dialogue on alternative fuels, green shipping corridors, and pathways to net-zero shipping.

Green Shipbuilding: Connecting Danish innovation with Indian shipowners and shipbuilders to advance sustainable vessel design and construction.

Port Optimisation and Digitalisation: Introducing Danish solutions for port electrification, smart operations, and digital certification systems.

Maritime Capacity Building: Strengthening seafarer training and knowledge exchange on international maritime standards, including the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers.

Sustainable Ship Recycling: Promoting environmentally sound recycling practices, alongside skills development and employment generation.

Naval Technologies: Facilitating dialogue with Indian naval stakeholders on Danish maritime technologies and expertise.

Milestones

In 2025, Denmark and India launched a pre-feasibility study on green shipping corridors in India. This was followed in 2026 by a Consortium Incubation Workshop, convened together with the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, the Directorate General of Shipping, and the Indian Ports Association, to accelerate collaboration on high-potential shipping corridor projects.
