India-Denmark Cooperation on Water
Denmark and India are working together under the Green Strategic Partnership to advance sustainable, efficient and climate-resilient water management, with a focus on water security, innovation, knowledge exchange, technology and capacity building.
Denmark brings globally recognised expertise in:
- Efficient water utilities – reducing non-revenue water, improving operations and using digital solutions for smarter water management.
- Wastewater treatment – improving energy efficiency, optimising treatment processes and recovering resources.
- Groundwater management – advanced mapping, data management and modelling for sustainable water use.
- Digital and nature-based solutions – using smart monitoring, modelling and blue-green infrastructure to address flooding and strengthen climate resilience.
Indo-Danish Water Initiatives
- Sector Cooperation with Rajasthan: Cooperation on advancing sustainable and climate-resilient urban water management with Rajasthan including urban drinking water supply, wastewater management and river rejuvenation.
- Sector Cooperation with Ministry of Jal Shakti, Tamil Nadu and Assam: Support to the Jal Jeevan Mission through utility development, resource-efficient and data-driven water supply systems and technical training.
- Centre of Excellences: Centre of Excellence in New Delhi and Varanasi support advanced groundwater mapping, groundwater data management, hydrological and flood forecasting modelling, Glacial Lake Outburst Forecasting studies and capacity-building initiatives.
- Optimisation of Water Treatment Plant (Delhi): Advancing energy-efficient wastewater treatment through Danish digital solutions.
- Smart Lab for Clean Rivers (Varanasi): Danish technologies, digital solutions, and innovative approaches to support river rejuvenation, water quality management, and sustainable water resources planning.
- UNOPS’ support to Jal Jeevan Mission: Community awareness and gender-inclusive water initiatives.
- Non-Revenue Water Reduction (Maharashtra): Real-time leak detection and water loss prevention through the LEAKman pilot initiative.
- Seep Amber Micro Irrigation (Madhya Pradesh): Precision irrigation supporting improved agricultural productivity and environmental sustainability.
Denmark and India are deepening cooperation on sustainable and climate-resilient water management, with a focus on strengthening water governance, institutional capacity and integrated water management. Building on partnerships with the Ministry of Jal Shakti, MoHUA, state governments and other stakeholders, Denmark will continue to bring innovative solutions, technical expertise and private-sector capabilities to support the modernisation of India’s water infrastructure and build more efficient, resilient and sustainable water systems.
