Denmark will add 1.3 million EUR to the LEAD4PEACE programme, that was launched in December 2023 by Denmark and UN Women. The aim of the programme is to strengthen women’s leadership, tackle gender-based violence, and to advance the Women, Peace and Security Agenda across the four countries.

The Ambassador of Denmark to Moldova, Mr Søren Jensen, states:

“Denmark remains strongly committed to supporting Moldova’s European integration. Gender equality and women’s leadership are essential elements of a modern, democratic, and resilient society. Through this additional support, we continue to work with UN and Moldovan partners to advance the Women, Peace and Security Agenda, end violence against women, ensure access to justice, and empower female leaders.”

With Danish support, free legal services have been expanded across the region. In Moldova, specialized legal aid has been provided to female survivors of violence, helping more than 170 women. Additional work has focused on raising awareness of gender-based violence, and improving access to justice.

Over 300 students and justice professionals in Moldova have strengthened their capacities in gender equality and gender-based violence prevention, and a dedicated recovery room was established to support emergency operators exposed to the psychological strain of handling gender-based violence calls. Support for women in leadership has helped ministers, state secretaries, and other senior officials build skills and confidence through coaching, networking, and inspiring talks.

Broader efforts have also trained over 1,100 professionals from security institutions, military, police academies, penitentiaries, and civil society, with more than 570 participants deepening their commitment to the Women, Peace and Security Agenda.

The additional funding from Denmark includes around 131,000 EUR to efforts in Moldova, bringing Denmark’s total support to advance gender equality in Moldova to 2.7 million EUR, implemented by civil society and UN Women. The additional contribution to efforts in Moldova will support the implementation of the Women Peace and Security Agenda, ending violence against women, ensuring access to justice, and support women leadership.
