What we do

Here you can find an overview of the areas we cover in Portugal. The Danish Embassy in Lisbon reports to the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and is, therefore, Denmark’s official representation in Portugal and the accredited countries.

Consular service

The consular department provides service and assistance to Danish citizens who require it during their travel or stay in the countries where the Embassy is accredited. This work includes, for example, issuing passports or assisting Danish citizens who find themselves in difficult situations such as serious illness, death, or imprisonment. In this task, the consular department is supported by honorary consulates located throughout Portugal. Consular services also include elaboration of declarations, legalisations and translations of official Danish documents. The services provided by the consular department are subject to the consular assistance fees set by the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. For more information on the above mentioned topics, please visit the Danish page Rejse og ophold.

NB. The Danish Foreign Service is not empowered to grant funds in cases where Danish nationals and foreign nationals with a permanent address in Denmark are in need while travelling abroad. This applies whether it concerns requests to borrow money for a ticket back to Denmark, payment of hospital bills, medical evacuation to Denmark, legal costs, etc.

Politics and economics

Participating in and reporting on Foreign Policy is a key objective of the Political and Economical Department in Portugal. The Political and Public Diplomacy Department works to strengthen cooperation between Danish and Portuguese authorities, placing particular emphasis on promoting Danish priorities on the European Union’s agenda. The department monitors political and economic developments in Portugal and prepares reports on the current situation for the relevant authorities in Denmark. More broadly, it seeks to raise awareness of issues that are priorities for Denmark through public diplomacy efforts aimed at the general public.

Trade and export

The Commercial Department of the Embassy serves as a partner and adviser for Danish companies considering exporting to or producing in Portugal. For more information regarding our services for Danish companies, click here (in Danish). To learn more about the Trade Council, click here.

Press, culture, and public diplomacy

The department for Press, Culture and Public Diplomacy is responsible for external communication and cultural events. We provide information on Danish-related events and current affairs to the Portuguese and Danish media and general public in Portugal.
