What to do if your theatre was hit by Russian missiles in the beginning of the full-scale invasion? If you ask the Mykolaiv Drama Theatre, the only option is to keep working from the shelter, support the local community and work hard to reconstruct the building. And now, the theatre and its garden have been rebuilt, with the ground level and big theatre hall again being full of life.
On International Children’s Day 1 June, the embassy and @Danish Cultural Institute were happy to work with Mykolaiv Drama Theatre to mark our support for children and share bright examples of Danish culture. As a celebration of Danish fairytales, the theatre staged a mesmerizing new production of H. C. Andersen’s The Little Mermaid, and together with @Musem Odense, children learned about the many creative aspects of Andersen’s life, from poetry to dance to paper-cutting. Later in the day, children and their families had the chance to go on a virtual bikeride through Copenhagen using VR glasses, while the youngest audience watched the modern bike fairytale “Cykelmyggen Egon”.
Countless air alarms sounded throughout the day, but with support from the resilient theatre and audience, it all turned out as a touching and successful event - inclusive for local citizens as well as internally displaced persons who have evacuated to Mykolaiv from Kherson and other frontline regions.
