In Ukraine more than 740 water management facilities have been damaged or destroyed due the war since 2022 leaving residents without access to clean drinking water and flooding of homes according to Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources.
This year’s theme, Glacier Preservation and Health, underscores the role of glaciers in regulating global water cycles. Their rapid melting threatens water security and livelihoods, calling for urgent action to protect water resources, enhance climate resilience, and ensure access to safe water.
Denmark remains committed to supporting Ukraine’s water sector both on the national and local level, through the Mykolaiv-Denmark Partnership, Inter-Ministerial Cooperation (Strategic Sector Cooperation) on Water and Environment, and the Municipal Twinning Programme, Trade Council and Financial Institutions —helping to rebuild and modernize Ukraine’s water sector.
• Denmark funded reverse osmosis systems with Grundfos pumps, providing clean drinking water after Mykolaiv’s water supply was disrupted.
Infrastructure Rehabilitation:
• With Danish company PER AARSLEFF and World Bank support, modern repair technology was introduced, allowing fast, reliable fixes without road excavation.
• In cooperation with Mission10forty and Denmark’s financial support, the International Organization for Migration IOM Ukraine installed five water points, now serving 4,000+ people in Mykolaiv region.
• Ambassador Ole Egberg Mikkelsen visited Mykolaiv’s water treatment station many times.
