The sector for renewable energy is growing in Australia with a supportive regulatory environment assisting the sector to transition from fossil energy. The Australian Government is supporting 40 GW of renewable energy projects through the Capacity Investment Scheme (CIS) in order to reach their goal of 82% renewable energy by 2030. In comparison, Australia had around 40% renewable energy by the end of 2024. The country has some of the world’s best renewable energy resources making it very attractive for projects within on-/offshore wind, solar, battery and pumped hydro. Australia has some of the best wind and solar resources in the world to produce renewable energy. Combined with Australia’s massive landmasses, the conditions are ideal for green hydrogen and Power-to-X (PtX) projects. PtX is seen as a key opportunity to transition jobs from the fossil industry (coal, gas and mining) into a green economy and the sector is therefore getting substantial funding. The Australian Government has agreed to spend AU$ 4bn on getting the first strategic PtX projects started as well as a Hydrogen Production Tax Incentive which will provide producers with AU$ 2 per kg hydrogen. Australia is focusing on using the hydrogen to decarbonise 3 main sectors: the mining sector (incl. green iron/steel), green ammonia and liquid fuels for shipping, aviation etc. Danish developers and solutions providers have major opportunities in Australia as the country is aiming to be one of the global leaders within hydrogen before 2030.
