Dual/multiple citizenship, if obtained automatically at birth, has always been accepted by Denmark.

However, a new Danish law about dual/multiple citizenship has come into force on 1st September 2015. This means that Danish citizenship holders will now be able to apply for another citizenship/further citizenship without losing their Danish citizenship. Those persons who have already lost their Danish citizenship will be able to apply to regain it during a 5-year period from 1st September 2015 to 31st August 2020.

If one of the parents is a Danish national, your child will obtain a right to Danish nationality. However, if the father is Danish and NOT married to the mother of the child, an application has to be submitted.

As a general rule, Danish nationals born abroad will have to apply for retention of Danish nationality before the age of 22.

Danish nationals born abroad may lose their Danish citizenship on attaining the age of 22, unless they apply between the age of 20 and 22 to retain it.
