It is now possible for third-country nationals holding valid R/W permits (physical residence/work permit cards) issued by a Schengen Member State in accordance with the Council Regulation to travel to the Faroe Islands or Greenland for short-term stay (up to 90 days) without obtaining a visa. Please see the list of residence permits issued by Member States in Annex 22 of the Visa Code Handbook on the website of the European Commission.
Third-country nationals who are subject to a visa (and does not hold a valid R/W permit cf. above) must still apply for a visa to the Faroe Islands or Greenland prior to travel. Third-country nationals who have already entered Schengen or Denmark on a valid visa and who wish to travel to the Faroe Islands or Greenland must still apply for a visa at a Danish VAC/visa issuing representation abroad or apply for an entry permit at the Danish Immigration Service in Denmark.
Tourists traveling through Iceland are advised to apply for a special visa to Greenland or the Faroe Islands through a Danish Embassy in their home country. Find it here.
As the residence permit cards issued in the Faroe Islands and Greenland does not meet the requirements of the Council Regulation as yet, applicants holding valid R/W permit cards from the Faroe Islands or Greenland must still apply for a visa in order to travel to Denmark or other Schengen Member States for now.
