IAEA Board of Governors
IAEA Board of Governors
IAEA Board of Governors
Vienna, 8-12 June 2026
Agenda item: Implementation of the NPT safeguards agreement and
relevant provisions of the United Nations Security Council resolutions
in the Islamic Republic of Iran
Statement by Denmark
Thank you Chair,
1.Denmark fully aligns itself with the EU statement.
2.My country has had the opportunity to express its
concerns about the developments in Iran and the Middle
East in the Security Council. I will restrict myself to
underlining the importance we attach to maintaining the
current ceasefire until a durable agreement can be
reached.
3.Here, today, I will focus on the report before us. It is
alarming to read that the IAEA has been unable to
discharge its safeguards responsibilities with regard to
Iran and cannot verify the status of Iran’s nuclear
facilities and nuclear material. It is of key importance to
the credibility of the international non-proliferation
regime that the IAEA can implement safeguards
agreements. That it is unable to do so in a country with
a large stockpile of enriched uranium of unknown
whereabouts is a matter of grave proliferation concern.
4.We must urge Iran, therefore, to comply with its CSA
obligations. These cannot be suspended under any
circumstances, as the Director General has repeatedly
made clear. We commend the efforts by the Secretariat
to address safety concerns expressed by Iran and
underline the urgent need for Iran to respond positively
and in line with its safeguards obligations as well as with
the relevant Security Council resolutions, including by
providing the required reports and the necessary access
to the IAEA.
5. The Agency’s loss of continuity of knowledge about
Iran’s stockpiles and enrichment capacity must be
overcome. Denmark fully supports a verifiable diplomatic
solution to the Iranian nuclear issue which ensures that
Iran cannot develop or acquire a nuclear weapon. For
such a solution to be found, baseline knowledge about
Iran’s nuclear programme is a necessity. Therefore, it is
indispensable and of utmost urgency that Iran allow the
IAEA to resume its verification work.
Chair,
6.We also remain concerned about the possible presence
of undeclared nuclear material and activities in Iran in
the light of Iran’s unwillingness to address outstanding
safeguards issues. It was this that led the Board to
conclude, last June, that Iran was in non-compliance
with its Safeguards Agreement. It remains essential to
remedy this non-compliance.
Chair,
7. In these circumstances it is incumbent on all of us to
extend our maximum support to the IAEA and its
safeguards system. For this reason, we welcome the
resolution tabled by France, Germany, the UK and the
US and hope that it will provide an impetus for Iran to
resume its cooperation with the Agency and its
compliance with its obligations.
Thank you, Chair
