Lost money

If you are a tourist in Portugal and have been unlucky enough to lose your money, you will often be able to arrange a standard bank transfer by asking your Danish bank to transfer a sum to either Western Union or a Portuguese bank (e.g. Unicâmbio) in your location. You should allow at least two days for such a bank transfer. 

If you lose your money and/or debit card, you can call your bank in Denmark and arrange with them how to make an express money transfer.

If this is not possible, or if it is outside a Danish bank’s opening hours, please note that the embassy is aware of the following alternatives:

The Western Union Money Transfer® service. In Denmark, post offices, newsagents and other private shops, amongst others, act as Western Union agents. Information on the nearest Western Union agent in Denmark can be found on their website: Western Union: Send & Receive Money in Denmark

Assistance from the embassy

If the above mentioned is not possible, the Danish Embassy in Lisbon can, in most cases, assist with a money transfer. However, this is only for the purpose of returning home and only if there is someone in Denmark willing to cover the cost on your behalf.

This could be your family, friends, your bank, your insurance company or your employer, who must pay the amount you need into the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Copenhagen. Once the embassy or consulate has received confirmation of the payment from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, you will be paid the money in local currency.

Alternatively, your bank or family/friends in Denmark can provide a written guarantee for the advance, after which the embassy may be able to assist with the purchase of a flight ticket and cover other expenses related to your return journey to Denmark.
