Death certificates

You must contact the Danish Health Data Authority for the issuance of death certificates. You can receive the certificate electronically via Digital Post or have it issued with a physical/wet signature.

Purchase Apostille/legalisation in our webshop:

You must make a purchase for legalisation/Apostille in our webshop prior to uploading, submitting, physically sending, or digitally forwarding the document for legalisation. It costs 230 DKK per document. You will receive a purchase receipt by e-mail.

After completing the purchase:

1. Documents received via Digital Post on borger.dk can be forwarded directly to the Legalisation Office. Please find the guideline here.

2. Physically signed documents from the municipality must be submitted in person or sent by post or courier to the Legalisation Office. We do not accept scans, copies, or prints of physically signed death certificates.

When the documents are received and processed at the Legalisation Office:

1. Documents forwarded from Digital Post will be printed by the Legalisation Office and can be collected in person or returned by post or courier.

2. Documents submitted in person will be legalised immediately or returned by post or courier.

Document collection by courier or return by post: 

Processing time is 5-7 business days after we receive the documents. Processing time may be longer during busy periods.

You are responsible for postal arrangements and/or courier collection in connection with legalisation of documents. You can optionally purchase Quick Letter return postage in our webshop or directly from PostNord's website. The receipt for purchase and return postage code/label must be included with the documents for shipment or sent digitally to [email protected].

For courier collection during our opening hours, please send the waybill to [email protected] after we have processed your documents.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is not responsible for shipment and cannot advise on delivery times. We kindly refer to the relevant postal provider or courier.

Not registered for Digital Post?

If you are not registered for Digital Post, contact the Danish Health Data Authority to obtain a death certificate, stamped and signed with a physical/wet signature. A scan or copy of the signature is not accepted.
