Marriage certificates

How to obtain the document

If you were married at the municipality:

  • We can legalise your original marriage certificate which you have received from the municipality. The certificate must be signed with a stamped and a physical/wet signature.

If you were married in a church:

  • We can legalise your original marriage certificate which you have received from the church office where you were married. The certificate must be signed with a physical/wet signature.
  • You can request your marriage certificate with a digital signature at borger.dk. Visit borger.dk for more information.

If you married in another religious community than the Evangelical Lutheran church in Denmark or the municipality:

It is only the municipalities that can issue marriage certificates for weddings carried out in recognised religious communities. The authorisation to perform the weddings does not include the issuing of marriage certificates. The religious communities are therefore not authorised to issue marriage certificates in connection to weddings carried out in the community.

To get an Apostille/legalisation for your certificate, follow these steps:

  • Before making the purchase, decide if you want to receive the Apostille as an E-Apostille (electronic) or a physical Apostille.
  • Purchase an Apostille or legalisation through our webshop. Please see our webshop guide here for assistance.

After making the purchase, choose one of the following options:

  • Personally visit the Legalisation Office during the opening hours to submit/pick up the original document. The document will be legalised while you wait.
  • Send the original document by post. Please remember to enclose the receipt from the webshop. If you want the letter returned as recommended letter you can enclose a printed label from PostNord which you can order here
  • If you prefer, you can order a courier to pick up the letter at our office and send us the waybill to [email protected]

When the document is legalised, we will send it back by using the selected delivery method.

Please note that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is not responsible for the shipment.

Upload a digitally signed document and receive a physically signed version by post or by picking it up in our office. This option is only available if you have uploaded a document with a digital signature.

Receive the Apostille as an E-Apostille (electronically) directly in your browser. Please note that the E-Apostille will be available in your browser only immediately after the purchase. If you close the browser, you will not be able to retrieve the Apostille. An E-apostille can only be ordered, if you have uploaded a digitally signed document in the webshop. Please note that an E-Apostille is not stamped and signed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with a physical signature. Therefore, you should check if the country in which you are going to use the document accepts E-Apostilles.
