Medical certificates & pill passports

When travelling to countries in the Schengen area - and if your medical certificate is NOT legalised - it is possible to obtain a Schengen certificate for medicines with euphoric substances for own use, in an amount corresponding to the length of the journey, but a maximum of 30 days. The certificate is issued at the pharmacy. Read more here (only in Danish).

How to obtain the document

To ensure you can bring your medicine with you when traveling to another country, it is  important to take certain steps. This involves making sure you have the necessary documentation, especially if you are carrying a large quantity of medicine or if the medicine contains euphoric substances.

To obtain a medication certificate, you need to visit your own doctor and request a medical certificate. Make sure the certificate follows the instructions provided by the destination country’s embassy and includes all relevant information, such as your name, date of birth and passport number, the prescribed medicine, quantity etc.

The doctor must physically sign and stamp the certificate before it can be legalised. It is essential that the certificate has  a physical/wet signature, clearly stating the doctor's name and job title. Copies or scanned signatures are not accepted.

If the person who signed the document is not in our system, we will need to contact the doctor to verify the authenticity of the signature. To expedite the process, you can ask your doctor to send a scanned signature to the Legalisation Office's digital mailbox: Udenrigsministeriet > Legalisering, confirming the signature.
