How to apply for a Visa

Check if you need a visa to travel to Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden here.

Your visa application will be processed from the visa department at the Danish Embassy in London. You can contact the department at [email protected].

Your passport will be transferred to the Danish Embassy in Dublin. Once a decision is made by the visa department in London, the visa officer at the Danish Embassy in Dublin will return your passport to the VFS Global.

Applications for visas for Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden as well as Work and/or Residence Permits for Denmark must be submitted at the VFS Visa Application Centre in Dublin.

4. You will receive an appointment confirmation e-mail with your Appointment Letter attached as a PDF. 

NB: You will not be able to get an appointment sooner than the next time available unless there are unforeseen and serious circumstances. If it is an emergency, please contact the Embassy directly.

If you require an appointment to submit your visa application, please check the appointment system prior to completing the online application to ensure that appointments are available to suit your intended travel dates.

Validity of Irish multi-entry visa and GNIB Card/Irish Residence Permit (IRP) Card

The validity of the Irish multi-entry visa and GNIB Card/IRP Card must exceed that of your stay in the Schengen area by at least 1 month

The following Irish residence cards have a visa-exempting effect under Directive 2004/38/EC (also referred to as ‘Irish residence permit cards with Stamp 4 EU fam’):

• Article 10 residence cards issued to family members of those EU citizens who have moved to a Member State other than that of their nationality.
• Permanent residence cards issued under Article 20 of Directive 2004/38/EC (replacing the five-year residence card issued under Article 10 of Directive 2004/38/EC).

Holders of the above-mentioned residence cards do not need a short-stay visa to travel for up to 90 days in a 180-day period to any EU Member State, including Norway, regardless of the participation of the issuing or visited Member State in the Schengen area without controls at internal borders, and independently of whether or not the holder of the card accompanies or joins the EU citizen.

If you are travelling with your Irish spouse/civil partner and hold a GNIB card/Irish residency permit card with Stamp 4 you require a visa to visit the Schengen states.

Documentation requirements:

When applying for a visa to travel with your Irish spouse/civil partner you must submit all of the following documents:

• A printed and signed ApplyVisa cover letter (you print the cover letter when you complete your visa application online).
• Passport/travel document, which must exceed your stay in the Schengen-area by at least 3 months. The passport/travel document must have been issued within the last 10 years and must have at least two blank pages. You must also bring a colour photocopy of the entire passport.
• GNIB/IRP card plus residence stamp in passport must exceed your stay in the Schengen area by at least 3 months. No exceptions will be made. Bring a colour photocopy of IRP card.
• Your spouse's/civil partner's passport/travel document. You must bring a colour photocopy of these.
• Your original marriage certificate/civil partnership certificate. If the certificate is not in English, you must also bring an English translation. 
• Proof that you are travelling with your Irish spouse/civil partner.
