SMEs contribute significantly to the Danish economy, representing 99% of Danish companies and accounting for a quarter of Danish exports. They also play a key role in driving sustainable transition and innovation. The Trade Council supports Danish SMEs in their international exports and expansion in collaboration with regional Business Hubs in Denmark. SMEs are eligible for a number of specialised services and grants.
The Trade Council in Brussels specifically assists Danish SMEs looking to export to Belgium and/or Luxembourg. It also engages in regional cooperation with Trade Council offices in the Hague, Berlin, Hamburg, and Munich.
In addition to individual tailor-made SME assistance, the Trade Council also offers a number of SME programmes, which include assistance in developing initial export plans (Export Sparring), market specific assessment of SME business models (Scope Your Business Model), and the facilitation of collaboration between Danish companies across a sector to explore export opportunities for Danish solutions within that sector (Strategic Business Alliance). In 2025, SMEs are eligible for a 50% reduction on The Trade Council's hourly fee.
To qualify for the Trade Council’s SME subsidies, a company must meet the following criteria:
- Danish Registration: The company must be registered in the Danish Central Business Register (CVR).
- EU SME Definition: SMEs are enterprises which employ fewer than 250 persons and have either an annual turnover not exceeding EUR 50 million or an annual balance sheet total not exceeding EUR 43 million. For linked enterprises, the combined headcount and financial figures of all entities within the linked group must be considered.
