Information about shelters and safe rooms

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark, Protocol Department, presents its compliments to all Heads of Diplomatic Missions and Consulates accredited to Denmark and to International Organisations and Other Missions resident in Copenhagen and Honorary Consulates in Denmark and has the honour to inform about shelters and safe rooms in Denmark.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Protocol Department, has been in contact with the Danish Emergency Management Agency (DEMA), who has informed as follows:

The current military security assessment does not indicate that there is a military threat against Denmark. As shelters are foreseen to be used by citizens in connection with war acts in Denmark, there is not an acute need for preparing shelters and safe rooms.

If nuclear emissions should spread from Ukraine to Denmark, you need to go indoors to reduce the risk of radiation, and to keep yourself updated about further concrete recommendations. In a situation with nuclear emissions, shelters will not provide extra protection.

In general, Danish municipalities are responsible for public shelters, whereas the responsibility for safe rooms is with the owner of a building, under supervision of the municipalities in connection with making the safe rooms ready for use.

General information about shelters and safe rooms and advice on how to conduct in different types of crises and warnings will be found on DEMA’s home page DEMA (brs.dk)

Finally, if the security assessment changes, it is the Minister of Defence who will instruct the municipalities to make the public shelters ready for use.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark, Protocol Department, takes this opportunity to renew to all Heads of Diplomatic Missions and Consulates accredited to Denmark and to International Organisations and Other Missions resident in Copenhagen and Honorary Consulates in Denmark the assurances of its highest consideration.
