Are you passionate about water distribution and interested in putting your expertise to work internationally?

Join the Trade Council of Denmark in Chicago and help connect Danish water expertise with opportunities in the U.S. market. As our new Water Distribution Advisor, you will work at the intersection of water technology, international collaboration, and business development, helping American water utilities explore how Danish solutions can address local water management challenges.

About the position

The Trade Council of Denmark's Water Technology Alliance (WTA) connects Danish water technology companies with utilities, authorities, and industry stakeholders across North America. Through knowledge sharing, technical collaboration, and business development, we strengthen partnerships between Danish companies and American water stakeholders.

We are looking for a Technical or Commercial Advisor with experience in the water distribution to join our North American Water Team. Based at the Consulate General of Denmark in Chicago, you will join a local team of approximately 15 colleagues while working closely with the Water Technology Alliance's team of 8 advisors across North America.

Your primary focus will be on water distribution, with activities primarily across the Midwest, Texas, and California. You will work closely with Danish technology companies and American water professionals, building relationships, identifying opportunities, and sharing knowledge that can support more efficient and resilient water systems.

Who are we looking for?
We are looking for someone with a solid understanding of drinking water distribution who enjoys working with people, sharing knowledge, and exploring new opportunities.
You may come from a water utility, an engineering consultancy, or a technology provider. What matters most is your understanding of the water sector and your motivation to apply that knowledge in an international and commercially oriented environment.

Ideally, you bring:

  • A technical or business-related educational background with relevant experience in the water sector.
  • A commercial mindset or an interest in developing your business development skills.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to translate technical knowledge into relevant insights for different audiences.
  • The ability to build relationships and engage with stakeholders from different professional and cultural backgrounds.
  • An independent, proactive, and results-oriented approach to your work.
  • A collaborative mindset and a willingness to share knowledge and learn from colleagues.
  • You should also be comfortable with frequent domestic travel, with approximately 80 travel days per year, primarily within the U.S. and to Denmark.

Main tasks and responsibilities

As our new Advisor, you will:

  • Share Danish water expertise and experiences through utility meetings, technical workshops, and presentations, helping U.S. stakeholders understand how Danish solutions can address local challenges.
  • Expand our network in the Midwest and Texas by engaging with utilities, authorities, industry associations, and consulting engineers.
  • Support business development for Danish WTA partner companies by understanding their technologies, identifying market opportunities, and communicating their value to potential U.S. customers.
  • Organize fact-finding trips to Denmark for U.S. water professionals to explore Danish water technologies, exchange knowledge, and identify opportunities for collaboration.
  • Advise Danish companies and organizations seeking to enter or expand their presence in the U.S. water market.

What we offer

At the Trade Council of Denmark, you will have the opportunity to put your expertise to work in an international and diplomatic environment, with room to take ownership of projects, develop professionally, and make a tangible contribution to Danish-American collaboration.

You will become part of a welcoming and social workplace in Chicago, where colleagues work closely together across different areas of expertise. We value collaboration, knowledge sharing, and an informal atmosphere, even when the workday gets busy.

No two days are quite the same. From meetings with industry professionals and visits to water utilities to international travel and events, the position offers a varied workday with opportunities to build new relationships and broaden your professional experience.

Beyond the workplace, you will have the opportunity to live and work in Chicago, the third-largest city in the U.S., known for its iconic architecture, lakefront beaches, world-class museums, and vibrant food, music, and cultural scene.

Employment conditions

  • You will be employed as a Commercial Advisor, based at the Consulate General of Denmark in Chicago. Remote work is not available.
  • The expected starting date is March 1, 2027, subject to security clearance.
  • You will be offered a two-year, full-time local employment contract with the possibility of extension.
  • Your employment will be governed by the Staff Rules for locally employed staff at Danish representations in the United States.
  • Your salary will reflect your qualifications, relevant professional experience, and demonstrated results.
  • Benefits include five weeks of paid vacation, healthcare coverage with an 80% employer contribution, and a pension scheme.
  • The position requires approximately 80 travel days annually, depending on projects and activities.
