Six months at the intersection of renewable energy, commercial diplomacy, and cowboy culture – right in the heart of the energy capital of the world.

As an intern at Consulate General of Denmark in Houston, you become part of Denmark's presence in Texas – a state where a booming population growth, and strong commercial presences collides with a vibrant culture and Southern hospitality. Depending on your team, you'll work with anything from promoting Danish energy solutions, energy transitions partnerships to marketing and communication.
No two days look the same. You might deep dive into market analysis supporting Danish companies one day, and help prepare a high-level delegation visit or an event the next. From the beginning, you’ll be given responsibility and encouraged to bring your own interests into the work.
You’ll join a team of around 10 colleagues and one fellow intern each semester, working across the Energy Team’s various subsectors:
Green Transition
Wind
Biogas
Data Centers
The internship is unpaid. You receive a monthly contribution of roughly DKK 5,000 toward documented expenses like rent.
Our interns usually live inside “The Loop”, in areas such as Montrose, Midtown, Upper Kirby, Museum District, River Oaks or Downtown.
Interns typically share furnished housing through Airbnb or a common landlord, with a budget of approximately DKK 6,800-7,500 per month per person.
Most interns are eligible for Danish SU – check your individual eligibility before you go.
Most former interns have supplemented their budget with grants and scholarships. We can connect you with previous interns who can share their experiences and tips on where to apply.
Getting to the office: The vast majority of our interns commute to the office by bus, which is the easiest and most common option. Biking, Uber/Lyft, or renting a car are alternative options for greater flexibility, but may not always be viable or affordable in the long run.
Our interns come from different universities, study programs and countries. We actively value that mix, and you'll be working alongside people who see things differently than you do.
Many interns are writing a report or assignment as part of their degree – we build time into your internship for that, planned together with your supervisor.
On top of various U.S. national holidays, you're granted vacation days during your stay – plenty of room to actually get out and explore Houston and beyond.
Interns don't just work together – they explore the Texan culture together. Houston is the most diverse city in America, famous for its world-class culinary scene, vibrant arts district, and major sports team.
You can visit the NASA Space Center, see alligators in the wild and in the spring, you can experience the world’s biggest rodeo, Houston Livestock and Rodeo. In the weekends, you can taste your way through the city’s tacos, tex-mex, bahn mis, and barbecue, or go on 3-6 hours road trips to Austin, Dallas, San Antonio or New Orleans.
You're ambitious, curious and ready to take ownership of your own experience. You don't need to know exactly where it will take you but you should be ready to move far from home, manage your own finances and housing, and roll with a workplace where priorities shift fast when delegations, events or global developments demand it.
