The Trade Council of Denmark in North America's Food & Agriculture team has established the Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) Platform, which is designed for Danish companies that wish to start or continue their export journey on the Californian market.

Why engage in California?
California is the world’s 5^th largest agricultural sector, producing more than 400 commodities ranging from dairy and meat products to vegetables, fruit, and nuts and is a significant contributor to the economy of the state and the food supply of the nation.

However, the agricultural sector in California is facing several challenges connected to both population growth and climate-related consequences.

California recognizes these challenges and has created supportive regulatory conditions for CSA solutions through a comprehensive suite of CSA programs.

These programs offer financial incentives as well as technical support to farmers who are investing in CSA practices. These ambitious targets to reduce GHG emissions have created a vacuum for implementing climate-smart agriculture.

Three core recommendations to work in California

Rambøll has prepared a report for Food Nation Denmark and the Trade Council in North America. The report presents three core recommendations for Danish CSA providers based on their assessment of the Californian market:

Engage in partnerships with local market players: Partnering with relevant and aligned Californian organizations can help with everything from regulatory process to cultural fit.
Provide end-users the information they require to make educated decisions: Californian consumers are increasingly interested in sustainable farming practices and want to be sure that the products they buy are truly sustainable. Therefore, sharing science-based information regarding the solutions environmentally, economically and social impact is of great importance.
Political cooperation: The suite of CSA programs in California can increase the investment in CSA solutions. However, it is important to understand how the programs work, and how it can be used to benefit the Danish companies’ CSA solutions. Therefore, cooperating with the local programs can enhance the market conditions and help in positioning.
